In a new Market Report, Stationery (Personal & Office), market intelligence provider Key Note predicts that the stationery industry will continue its rapid growth across much of the developing world, particularly in countries such as the People's Republic of China (PRC) and India. As well as having expanding markets for stationery, these regions are also assuming increasing importance as exporters and suppliers to other parts of the world.
 
As urbanisation increases in these markets, the movement of people from rural locations to the major cities is expected to continue. This will create opportunities for stationery suppliers as the urban workforce increases in size, especially since many of the new positions created are in service-related, rather than manufacturing, industries. The PRC and India both have vast populations, presenting a large potential customer base for personal stationery. Due to the high level of anticipated local demand, both countries are home to an increasing number of multinational companies, which has benefited the commercial stationery market.
 
The PRC has been one of the world's leading exporters of stationery for some time. However, the strong growth being experienced in domestic demand means that the country is expected to overtake the US as the world's largest stationery market at some time within the next few years. Similarly, India has experienced domestic growth in demand for stationery, largely as a result of the aforementioned arrival of many multinational companies, especially in industries such as computing and IT. The business sector has also seen demand benefit from the fact that multinational companies are increasingly using India as an outsourcing hub.
 
Another driver of the market in India is the growing number of schools and educational establishments being built across the region, which is boosting demand from the education sector. Meanwhile, the PRC is home to approximately 190 million high-school pupils, as well as 40 million undergraduates and 50 million post-education students. Although an increasing number of Chinese students are opting to study abroad in countries such as the US and the UK, the customer base within this sector remains a substantial one.
 
While the next few years are likely to remain extremely challenging for the UK stationery industry, the picture is not entirely gloomy. Key Note expects that it is highly possible that certain niche sectors of the industry will experience growth over the coming years, especially if they are able to tap into the rising demand for products offering value for money and more personalised designs. By 2014, Key Noteforecasts that the apparent market value will reach £1.6bn at current prices and £1.56bn at constant 2009 prices.
 
From an export perspective, the PRC and India are predicted to increase their significance as far as the world supply of stationery is concerned. India has already become a major exporter of stationery products to the Middle East region. However, the report concludes that much of the future success of these countries is likely to depend on how well they can address the growing demand for more value-added products, and thereby reduce their current reliance on lower-priced items.

Plastic products are labeled using the resin identification coding system developed by the SPI. To locate these codes, look for a single number surrounded by three chasing arrows that form a triangle, usually on the bottom of a plastic product. Here are the seven codes, as provided by the American Chemistry Council:
  • Resin code 1: PET: Polyethylene Terephthalate, nicknamed polyester
  • Resin code 2: HDPE: High Density Polyethylene
  • Resin code 3: PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride, also called vinyl
  • Resin code 4: LDPE: Low Density Polyethylene
  • Resin code 5: PP: Polypropylene
  • Resin code 6: PS: Polystryene
  • Resin code 7: OTHER: This code is used to label products made with a resin not already categorized, or a combination of the resins listed above.
Those marked with a #3 are PVC plastic containing potentially harmful phthalates, and those marked with a #7 may contain polycarbonate plastic, which is made with dangerous Bisphenol A(BPA).
You can also check toy packaging for the label "ASTM." This label indicates that the American Society for Testing and Materials has found that the toy meets national safety standards, and therefore should not contain toxic chemicals

A ballpoint pen is a writing instrument with an internal ink reservoir and a sphere for a point. The internal chamber is filled with a viscous ink that is dispensed at its tip during use by the rolling action of a small sphere. The sphere, usually from 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm in diameter, may be made of brass, steel, tungsten carbide, or any durable, hard (nondeformable) material.
The gift manufactures of economical, reliable ballpoint pens arose from experimentation, modern chemistry, and the precision manufacturing capabilities of 20th century technology. Many patents worldwide are testaments to failed attempts at making these pens commercially viable and widely available. The ballpoint pen went through several failures in design throughout its early stages.
The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October 1888, to John Loud, a leather tanner, who was attempting to make a writing instrument that would be able to write on his leather products, which then-common fountain pens could not do. Loud's pen had a small rotating steel ball, held in place by a socket. Although it could be used to mark rough surfaces such as leather, as Loud intended, it proved to be too coarse for letter writing and was not commercially viable.
In the period between 1904 and 1946 particularly, alternatives or improvements to the fountain pen were invented. Slavoljub Eduard Penkala invented a solid-ink fountain pen in 1907, a German inventor named Baum took out a ballpoint patent in 1910, and yet another ballpoint pen device was patented by Van Vechten Riesburg in 1916. In these inventions, the ink was placed in a thin tube whose end was blocked by a tiny ball, held so that it could not slip into the tube or fall out of the pen. The ink clung to the ball, which spun as the pen was drawn across the paper. These proto-ballpoints did not deliver the ink evenly. If the ball socket were too tight, the ink did not reach the paper. If it were too loose, ink flowed past the tip, leaking or making smears. Many inventors tried to fix these problems, but without commercial success stationery manufacturers.
László Bíró, a Hungarian newspaper editor, was frustrated by the amount of time that he wasted in filling up fountain pens and cleaning up smudged pages, and the sharp tip of his fountain pen often tore the paper. Bíró had noticed that inks used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving the paper dry and smudge free. He decided to create a pen using the same type of ink. Since, when tried, this viscous ink would not flow into a regular fountain pen nib, Bíró, with the help of his brother George, a chemist, began to work on designing new types of pens. Bíró fitted this pen with a tiny ball in its tip that was free to turn in a socket. As the pen moved along the paper, the ball rotated, picking up ink from the ink cartridge and leaving it on the paper. Bíró filed a British patent on 15 June 1938. 
Earlier pens leaked or clogged because of incorrect viscosity of the ink, and depended on gravity to deliver the ink to the ball. Depending on gravity caused difficulties with the flow and required that the pen be held nearly vertically. The original Biro pen used capillary action and a piston that pressurised the ink column, solving the ink delivery flow problems. Later Biro pens had a spring that kept pressure on the piston, and still later the Biro pens used just gravity and capillary action. 
In 1941 the Bíró brothers and a friend, Juan Jorge Meyne, fled Nazi Germany and moved to Argentina. On 10 June they filed another patent and formed Bíró Pens of Argentina. The pen was sold in Argentina under the Birome brand (portmanteau of Bíró and Meyne), which is how ballpoint pens are still known in that country. László was known in Argentina as Ladislao José Bíró. This new design was licensed by the British, who produced ball point pens for RAF aircrew as the Biro; they found they worked much better than fountain pens at high altitude, the latter being prone to ink-leakage in the decreased atmospheric pressure stationery accessories.
